If you’re looking for a sweet little town to escape to during the summertime, Grand Lake is the place to go. There are vacation homes and tiny cabins around the lake that you can rent (or buy if you’re feeling fancy and willing to let me stay). It’s only a 2+ hour scenic drive west of Denver and once you pull into town you instantly feel relaxed and ready to unwind.
When we recently visited for a few days we rented a cabin in Lupine Village: which isn’t really a village at all, but a set of six cabins that were built in a circle with a nice fire pit in the middle. From the outside it wasn’t much to look at, but upon entering the cabin it was clean, updated, and exactly what we were hoping for. The best part was that we could walk just two blocks to get downtown.
I made a short video of Lupine Village that you can view here:
We spent the majority of our visit on foot as you can walk to a wide variety of restaurants, shops, the lakefront, and a playground for the kids. The marina is also very close and it is easy to make a reservation to rent a wide variety of watercrafts. The only time we used our car was to drive a little over a mile to the trailhead to Adams Falls where we went on a nice morning hike with our kids. Side note: In my kid-free days I would have walked the mile from my cabin to start the hike but when you have a 4 & 6 year old in tow, you don’t want to press your luck with endurance activities. Here’s a link to a video for the Adams Falls Trail: Link
Overall it was a wonderful few days. The kids loved Polly’s Sweet Shop where we stopped once for ice cream and then the next day for shaved ice… because… summer… And I am still dreaming about the “Thai Pie” pizza at The White Buffalo Pizza Company. Seriously, we might make a day drive back to Grand Lake just for that pizza.
Grand Lake is a place that we will come back to visit in the near future, and we will definitely not just recommend it to our friends but bring them with us as well. Check it out, you will not be disappointed.
